Insomnia

So, apparently all those articles that say you shouldn't run 2 hours before bedtime are legit. Egad. I woke up at 2am and that was pretty much it. I'd blame it on the sweltering heat of late (mid 80's... Texans, don't hate... we don't have AC), but I think it's my own damn fault. It sure was a pretty run, though. I ran along Alki beach - it runs along Puget Sound in West Seattle and has panoramic views of the city skyline, the islands, and the ferries going back and forth between the two. It's about a 5 minute drive from my condo. You can hear the waves lapping at the beach and rocks, and smell a hint of that ocean, salt-water air. Folks were out playing volleyball, riding bikes, teens were in huge groups shouting and texting in their cell phones, people walking and talking... if the water wasn't like 10 degrees and the beach 10 feet it'd feel like being at the coast.

There's something sort of mystical about the world at 2am. I went for a stroll around the block and the silence and the reality that most everything is at rest in the world (at least in this time zone) is peaceful. It's hard to find this silence during the day. We're still having our longer days of the year - it was light last night at 10pm and it's light again now - at 5am. Even my putrid pink-purple drugstore eye mask (it was all they had!) doesn't block out all of the light. So odd when I know in a few short months we'll be back to only having cloud-filtered, drizzle-infused light from 9a-3:30p.

I guess this post is more for you Austin/Texas folks who have never been out here. Perhaps I can give you enough details to either visit vicariously, or come visit for real... you've always got a place to stay.

I think I'll go do my dishes now. Have a good day.

"Cloud-filtered, drizzle-infused light from 9a-3:30p" is about the best description of Seattle's winter weather I have ever heard. Makes you really appreciate these days with 17 hours of sunlight!
